That’s Some Pig!
It is hard to believe the Napa Town and Country Fair has come and gone. It is something all the young at heart look forward to each year, and many people prepare for all year long -- especially, the Junior Livestock Auction.
Margaret Anne Wigger is one of these dedicated souls who for five years has been sending Executive Chef Kelly Macdonald letters inviting him to come and bid on her animals at the annual auction.
This year, Chef decided it was time to now come and see what the River Middle School 7th grader had to show. Time is tight, for the busy Chef, but just before he had to leave the auction on August 15, Margaret’s sow Big Girl came up for bid.

And, what a bidding it was! Chef finally bested the competition by jumping to $5 a pound for the 225 pound pig. He opted for custom cut and donated the pork to the Napa Boys and Girls clubs for their events and fund raising.
"It was one of most the memorable things I have done. It was so touching. These kids work so hard all year for this one moment. And you can’t help but think that they are a tad bit attached to the animal to boot," Chef said.
"But when Margaret came out and thanked me, it was heartfelt. I was really wowed – and to see the community come together like that for this moment, so incredible: the parents cooking out doors and serving people and dedicating their time for their kids. To see this (dedication) in our community just as strong as it is, what a wonderful opportunity."
