Tasting & Learning
We’re proud to be a part of the California wine scene here at the Napa Valley Wine Train and we love partnering with some of the region’s best—award-winning—wineries so that we can showcase them to you, our guests! That’s why we’re so excited to welcome Louis M. Martini to the Wine Train family and to introduce you to their incredible Cabernets, scenic vineyards, and rich history. Read on for more information on the Louis M. Martini winery.
Louis M. Martini arrived in California at the age of 12 in 1899. By 1906, he had made his first wine, and quickly traveled back to his native Italy to further hone his winemaking skills. In 1933, just as Prohibition was coming to an end, Louis M. Martini broke ground on his namesake winery in St. Helena—one of the first wineries opened after the end of prohibition. Deeply committed to his craft, and to the growth of Napa Valley as a world-class wine-producing region, Martini was one of the founding members of the Napa Valley Vintners Association in 1943.
Louis M. Martini are pioneers in Napa winemaking. They were the first winery to use cold fermentation in the area and have been harnessing wind power in their vineyards since 1951. Winemaking was handed down from father to son in the Martini family for three generations, until 2013 when Michael Eddy was named Winemaker. Eddy is only the fourth winemaker in the winery’s history and the first outside of the Martini family.
Louis M. Martini are known for their red wines. They were among the first wineries in Napa to bottle a varietal Merlot in 1970, and their 2013 Lot No. 1 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded a perfect 100-point score by The Wine Advocate. The winery now has five vineyards, and the wines produced at Louis M. Martini showcase the unique flavor profiles that each vineyard is capable of producing. The rich volcanic soil of their first and signature vineyard, Monte Rosso, has produced grapes of the highest quality for more than one hundred years.
The pinnacle wine in the Louis M. Martini portfolio is their Lot No. 1 Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s been in production since 1952 when Louis P. Martini (son to Louis M.) decided to select only the finest fruits available in order to showcase the complex characters and rich flavors unique to Cabernet Sauvignon.
