Maybe you woke up to blue skies and decided the day deserved something memorable. Maybe lunch plans fell through. Or perhaps you’re already in downtown Napa, looking at the afternoon ahead and wondering whether there’s still a chance to board the Wine Train.
There might be.
Same-day tickets may be available for both daytime and evening experiences, and we welcome walk-in guests whenever space allows. Advance reservations remain the best way to secure a specific experience, but a full itinerary isn’t required to come see us. Sometimes, showing up at the station is exactly how a great Napa Valley day begins.
I’ve spent enough time helping guests at the station to know that spontaneous trips carry their own kind of excitement. You arrive wondering what’s possible, and a little while later, you’re settling into a historic railcar with Napa Valley outside the window.

Seats can open for several reasons. A departure may not have sold out in advance, or space may become available closer to boarding. We can’t promise that a particular experience will have room, but our team will be happy to check what’s open when you arrive.
This is especially useful for travelers whose Napa Valley plans have some flexibility. You may be staying nearby, passing through downtown Napa, or deciding how you’d like to spend your final day in the Valley. Coming to the station gives you the chance to ask about that day’s departures in person.

Walk-in guests should aim to arrive by the following times.
- Legacy Experience at 9:15 am
- Lunch experiences at 10:30 am
- Dinner experiences at 5:30 pm
Arriving at these times doesn’t guarantee a ticket. It gives our team time to review availability and complete your purchase if seats are open.
If you’re hoping to find walk-in availability aboard the Wine Train, I wouldn’t recommend arriving at the last minute. Trains leave on a firm schedule, and you’ll want time to get situated and relax rather than rush through the station.
What Happens When You Arrive Without a Reservation?
Come to the station and speak with our guest services team. We’ll check the day’s remaining availability and let you know which experiences, if any, can accommodate your party.
Being flexible can help. The experience you had in mind may be full, while another departure still has room. Your party size can also matter. Finding room for two guests may be more likely than seating a larger group together, although every departure is different.

That’s the joy of an unexpected Wine Train journey. A few hours earlier, it wasn’t on the calendar. Then dinner is on the way and Napa Valley is passing outside the window. By the time you return to the station, the unplanned part of your day may be the part you remember best.
